2011 SCHOLARSHIP & GRANT RECIPIENTS

 

Jennifer Christine Barras, Alpha Pi, Texas State University. Mikanna Clark Taurman Voice Scholarship - $1,000.

 

Erin Bollacker, Mu Upsilon, Eastman School of Music. Beth Landis Music Education Scholarship - $5,000. Erin plans to pay off student loans with her money.

Julie Along Carr, Lambda, Ithaca College / Allied. Grant-in-Aid - $500. Julie used the money to help purchase three smaller sized violins for a kindergarten experience program at St. Mary's School, a lab school partner with Ithaca College School of Music.

 

Sacramento Alumni Chapter, Rona Commins. Helen Haupt Alumni Project Grant - $2,000. Members of the Sacramento Alumni Chapter produced a Helen Haupt Grant Benefit Concert. The proceeds were used towards sponsorship of Carnegie/Weill Music Institute LINK UP, a classroom music program for elementary schools to stimulate young students' interest in music by teaching them to sing, play recorders or violins. The students prepare to participate in a concert alongside a symphony orchestra.

 

Kira Dixon, Phi Mu, San Jose State University / San Jose Alumni. John and Mary Virginia Foncannon Choral Conducting or Sacred Music Scholarship - $7,000. Kira plans to use the money towards tuition, textbooks, room and board while earning a MM in conducting.

 

Kristen Doering, Xi, University of Kansas. Summer Scholarship - $1,000. Kristen planned to use the money to attend the Vianden Music Festival in Vianden, Luxembourg.

 

Jacob Michael Ertl, Mu Upsilon, Eastman School of Music, piano. Bernstein-Crosman Scholarship - $1,000. Jacob used the money to participate in the Gijon International Piano Festival in Spain.

 

Tahnee Fallis, Zeta Eta, SUNY - Binghamton. John and Mary Virginia Foncannon Conducting/Coaching Scholarship - $7,000. Tahnee is using the money for tuition, books, and living expenses while working on a MM in Choral Conducting at Binghamton University.

 

Cathleen Margaret Flynn, Gamma Psi, St. Mary of the Woods. La Vern Jackson Memorial Music Therapy Scholarship- $1,500. Cathleen planned to use the money for continuing education and training. This included clinical experience in rural Jamaica using cultural songs and hand-drumming. A variety of needy clients were served.

 

Anthony Green, Delta Rho, University of Colorado. Merle Montgomery Doctoral Grant - $1,000. Anthony planned to use the money to pay production costs of his final DMA project: a three-part opera comprised of three, one-act operas.

 

Emily Hagens, Epsilon Epsilon, Texas Christian University. Brena Hazzard Voice Scholarship - $5,000. Emily used the money for tuition for Canta in Florence, Italy, where she attended a Summer Intensive Opera Program. It is affiliated with Wichita State University.

 

Jeffery Kyle Hutchins, Phi Tau, University of North Texas, saxophone. Gerke Collegiate Artist Scholarship - $500. Kyle planned to use the money for tuition.

 

Michael Koch Kaufman, Mu Upsilon, Eastman School of Music, Los Angeles Alumni. The Jean Louise Martin Scholarship - $2,000. Michael plans to use the money to pay his rent while studying for his MM at USC.

 

Susan Lutterbach, Beta Psi, University of Indianapolis. Gerke Collegiate Artist Scholarship - $500. Susan plans to use the money for flute upgrades.

 

Allegresse Trio, Margaret Marco, Xi, University of Kansas. James and Lola Faust Chamber Music Scholarship - $5,000. The money is being used for the expenses incurred when Allegresse Chamber Trio travels for an invitational trip to Costa Rica and then to Puerto Rico. The group (oboe, flute, and piano), is introducing newly commissioned works to new audiences.

 

Yoko Nakatani, Boston Alumni. Mabel Henderson Memorial Grant for International Study - $1,500. Yoko planned to use the money to travel to Paris, France to study with Michele Laforest.

 

Joanna Nunley, Beta Psi, University of Indianapolis, piano. Madge Cathcart Gerke Scholarship - $500 ; Hazel B. Morgan Scholarship - $500 ; Nadine Williams Scholarship - $600.

 

Andrew Pramuk, Mu Upsilon, Eastman School of Music. Elizabeth Boldenweck Voice Scholarship - $500.

 

Deon Nielsen Price, Gamma, University of Michigan / Los Angeles Alumni. Bettylou Scandling Hubin Scholarship for World Music / Multicultural Music - $1,250. Deon used the money to pay for travel expenses to Beijing, China, to collaborate with Chinese composers and performers in four public concerts at two Beijing Universities, the Forbidden City Concert Hall and National Center for the Performing Arts.

 

Joseph Rebman, Phi Omicron, Cleveland Institute of Music, harp. Summer Scholarship - $1,000. Joseph used the money to attend the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, NC.

 

Patrick Scott, Mu Theta, University of Texas at Austin. Wihla Hutson Organ Scholarship - $800. Patrick is using the money to study for a DMA in organ performance.

 

Nicolas Susi, Xi, University of Kansas. Summer Scholarship - $1,000 ; Helen Haupt Piano Scholarship - $1,000. Nick used the money to attend Piano Master Classes at Banff Music Centre.

 

Hannah Thomas-Hollands, Phi Omicron, Cleveland Institute of Music, cello. Alberta Denk Scholarship for Violin, Viola, Cello - $500. Hannah used the money for room and board at the National Orchestral Institute at the University of Maryland. She had an amazing experience at NOI, studying with Eric Kim and Robert DeMaine, among others, and working with conductors such as Michael Stern and Carlo Rizzi on incredible repertoire.

 

Heidi Vanderford, Epsilon Sigma, Pacific Lutheran University / Tacoma Alumni. Summer Scholarship - $1,000 ; Sara Eikenberry Voice Scholarship - Postgraduate - $1,000. Heidi traveled to Madrid, Spain, to study interpretations of Spanish vocal music.

 

Paul Verona, New York City Alumni. Bettylou Scandling Hubin Scholarship for Music Technology - $1,250. Paul used the money for the latest music technology for a recording project of Iberia by Isaac Albeniz.

 

Alexa Joy Weinberg, Zeta Eta, SUNY - Binghamton. Edythe G. Burdin Scholarship - $1,000. Alexa plans to use the money for graduate school expenses.

 

Anthony Kouri Williams, Zeta Epsilon, Randolph-Macon College. Lillian Harlan Ramage Grant for Graduate Study in Composition - $500 ; Ellen Jane Lorenz Porter Grant for Graduate Work in Composition - $1,000. Anthony purchased a MacBook Pro laptop computer to help in his graduate studies in composition at George Mason University. He used the rest of the money for books.
